Killdeer
This winter, I spotted two Killdeer on the mudflats of Stanley Park. They were elegant shorebirds with distinctive double black bands across their white chests and brown upperparts. Just recently, in 2024, the IUCN has reclassified Killdeer from Least Concern to Near Threatened status. While these birds remain abundant and widely distributed, they have experienced significant but unexplained population declines over recent generations. I believe this was my first encounter with a non-Least Concern wild bird species in the Greater Vancouver area.

This winter, I later saw them multiple times again in Stanley Park and on the sandbars near the Fraser River in Richmond.
